Compressors in Automotive Workshops

The role of compressed air in automotive repair shops, bodywork and paint facilities, tire services, and vulcanizing workshops is undeniable. The increasing demand and professionalization of these businesses require a compressor that is properly sized and capable of handling extended operating hours with a continuous, consistent, and reliable air supply.

There are several factors to consider when selecting and operating this type of equipment.

  1. Define the Application

Given the variety of tasks performed in these facilities, the first step is to assess the air consumption requirements of the different pneumatic tools that the compressor will supply.

Among the most common are riveters, drills, pneumatic hammers, spray guns, airbrushes, sandblasters, saws, lathes, grinders, polishers, and milling machines. Each device requires a specific airflow and pressure: for example, a spray gun typically operates between 35–60 psi, while other tools demand 130–150 psi. Therefore, it is advisable to select a compressor with a pressure rating above that of the most demanding tool in the workshop.

  1. Installation and Location

Once the maximum performance requirements are established, proper placement of the compressor must be considered in relation to the workstations. Avoid dispersing machines too far apart, as this increases the cost of air line installations. Position the compressor in a space that allows easy access for preventive maintenance, ensuring proper ventilation and avoiding high temperatures to reduce the risk of overheating and extend equipment life.

  1. Noise Regulations

Another important consideration is compliance with local noise regulations applicable to workshops, particularly if the facility is located in residential areas. Excessive noise is not only disruptive to neighbors but can also pose health risks to operators.

  1. Safe and Responsible Operation

Always operate your compressor responsibly, using the recommended safety equipment and following the manufacturer’s instructions and technical specifications.
