What Are Air Compressors?

One of the least known technologies in compressed air systems is arguably one of the quietest and most reliable on the market. Its introduction several decades ago marked a significant technological advancement, expanding its range of applications across industries such as medical, automotive, chemical, food processing, electronics, and others.
Its operating mechanism consists of two identical spiral elements (scrolls) intermeshed with a 180° phase offset. One scroll remains stationary while the other performs an orbital motion around it. During operation, the scrolls make contact at multiple points, continuously forming six independent, crescent-shaped air chambers. These chambers originate at the outer perimeter and, with each compression cycle, progressively move toward the center of the scroll set. As the chamber volume decreases, pressure increases until the compressed air is discharged through the outlet port, delivering a continuous, smooth, and pulsation-free airflow.
It is worth highlighting that these positive displacement compressors can be up to 30% more efficient than piston compressors. In addition to their simple operation and user-friendly design, they require minimal maintenance. Due to their near-silent operation (approximately 65 dBA), scroll compressors have gained significant adoption in the medical sector. Oil-free configurations, in particular, are widely used in dialysis machines, nebulizers, and medical ventilators, where air purity and low noise levels are critical.
